Slimming World

The Slimming World diet is based around the concept of food optimising. The idea is that you choose either unlimited protein with small amounts of carbohydrate days ('red days), or unlimited carbohydrate with small amounts of protein days ('green days'). In addition to your basic menus, there are 'Syns' included to let you indulge yourself with crisps, chocolate, alcohol, or whatever your particular indulgence is. The idea is that unlimited portions (with lots of fruit and veg recommended) will keep you feeling full and less inclined to stray.

What Can I Eat

The diet uses everyday foods to let you incorporate it into your daily life rather than constantly stressing about how to find weird and wonderful ingredients. Nothing is really forbidden, though as you might expect foods like bread, cheese, chocolate, crisps, alcohol and other high calorie foods are limited to small quantities. However, you can always save up your daily 'Syns' allowance if you're expecting to have a bit of a blow-out at the weekend.

Pros

  • Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy to follow
  • The diet lets you eat 'normal' foods.
  • Unlimited portions of meat and eggs on red days, or of pasta and rice on green days, and of fruit and veg anytime, means you should always feel full.
  • Syns allow you to indulge yourself every day if you want to
  • Attending classes means that support is there when you need it
  • Suitable for meat-eaters and vegetarians

Cons

  • You will need to join the club to get hold of the books

Our Verdict

A diet that encourages you to eat balanced meals, and unlimited portions means it's a good one if you don't enjoy feeling hungry.
