Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is a high protein, low carbohydrate eating plan. Developed by Dr. Robert Atkins it is a tough regime that has proved popular and effective for a huge number of people.

What Can I Eat

The two week induction phase is tough, reducing carb intake to 20g per day, and cutting out caffeine, alcohol, milk, fruits, grains, cereals, breads and most types of vegetable.  But contrary to popular belief, this is only for the induction phase.

After the induction period dieters can slowly start to increase carbs by 5g per week until weightloss begins to plateau when should reduce intake slightly to maintain a steady weightloss.

Upon reaching goal weight you can slowly introduce more carbs to the point where you plateau. Throughout the diet you are encouraged to restrict carbs to those with a low glycaemic index.

Pros

  • Dieters who can stick to the regime report rapid weight-loss, particularly during induction
  • Fat and protein can be eaten freely which can be attractive to potential dieters

Cons

  • Side effects in the early stages can include bad breath, headaches and constipation
  • Anyone with diabetes or heart and kidney disorders should not follow the plan

Our Verdict

While Atkins shows good results for many it remains unpopular with nutrition experts. While many worry about the high fat content, it is possible to follow the diet without eating excessive amounts of fat.
